Let’s face it—straightening teeth is never a completely smooth ride. Even with Invisalign, which is way more comfortable than traditional metal braces, there are still a few bumps along the way. At OHM Dental, we’ve seen dozens of patients go through the same thing—excitement followed by a few days of “Why do my teeth feel weird?”
Here’s the thing: Discomfort with Invisalign is totally normal, especially during the first few days or whenever you switch to a new set of aligners. Likewise your teeth are literally moving. That pressure? It’s doing the work.
Why Does Invisalign Feel Uncomfortable Sometimes?
It’s not pain like you’d feel after a dental extraction or a cavity, but more like your teeth are being gently nudged. That “tight” feeling means the aligners are pushing your teeth into a new position. And your mouth isn’t used to it… yet.
A lot of our patients ask about attachments too. Those little tooth-colored bumps? They’re not just there for show. Moreover, they give the aligners grip, helping shift your teeth more precisely. At first, they can feel strange, especially to your lips and tongue. Some people say it feels like they have tiny pebbles stuck on their teeth—but don’t worry, that sensation fades.
Tips That Actually Help
Over the years, we’ve collected some useful tricks—some from dentists, some from our very own patients.
1. Wear the Aligners More, Not Less
This is a weird one. You’d think taking them out would ease the pain, right? But nope. On the other hand Keeping your aligners in for the full 22 hours actually helps your teeth settle faster and reduces discomfort over time. It’s like breaking in a new pair of shoes—you just have to keep walking in them.
2. Switch Trays Before Bed
A smart trick we often recommend : change to your new tray right before sleeping. That way, the tightest part of the adjustment happens while you’re asleep. You’ll probably wake up feeling better than if you’d changed them during the day.
3. Cold Water Helps More Than You’d Think
No fancy mouthwash needed—just sipping cold water throughout the day can ease irritation. It also keeps your mouth fresh, which is a nice bonus.
4. Orthodontic Wax is a Game Changer
If an attachment or aligner edge is bugging you, don’t suffer in silence. A little wax—yes, the kind we give —can make a big difference. Just apply a tiny bit over the spot that’s rubbing, and boom, instant relief.
5. Mild Painkillers Are Okay Too
If the pressure is really bothering you, it’s fine to take an over-the-counter painkiller like ibuprofen or paracetamol. Just don’t make it a habit—and check with your dentist if you’re unsure.
Don’t Worry—It Gets Easier
Here’s some good news: the discomfort doesn’t last. Besides most patients feel better within three to four days. In addition after a few weeks, you’ll barely notice you’re wearing aligners at all. Your mouth just gets used to it. For instance we’ve had patients that tell us they actually forget they’re even in.
If something feels really off—like a sharp edge cutting into your gums or an aligner that doesn’t seem to fit—call your dentist. At OHM Dental, we’d rather you reach out than try to tough it out. Sometimes it’s as simple as smoothing out an edge or making a small adjustment.
