A root canal is a procedure used to save infected or damaged teeth. In the center of each tooth, there is soft pulp tissue that contains nerve and blood vessels. When pulp tissue becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, injury, or cracks, it can cause severe pain and even become an abscess if not treated. During a root canal, an infection within the pulp is removed; cleaned and disinfected inner chambers of the tooth are sealed not to allow future infections. The procedure helps preserve your natural tooth, promoting long-term oral health.
A tender root canal usually gets rid of discomfort and anxiety throughout the treatment. This is what makes it unique:
This is what happens during a gentle root canal procedure:
Step 1: Exam and X-rays: The dentist will first check out your tooth and carry out some X-rays on your damaged tooth. This will determine the extent of infection or damage and, thus, will decide that this would be the best course of action with a root canal as the solution.
Step 2: Anesthesia to the Area: The dentist will apply the local anesthetic to the area to be done. If you have opted for sedation, this will be administered before this so you can relax and get comfortable enough to go through the procedure.
Step 3: Clean the Tooth: Once numb completely in all areas to be treated. The dentist will make a small hole on the top of the tooth for access to the infected or damaged pulp. With specific instruments, the dentist will remove the pulp and fully clean and disinfect the inside chambers of the tooth.
Step 4: Shaping and Sealing of the Tooth: After the cleaning procedure. The root canals of the tooth are shaped and filled up with a biocompatible substance called gutta-percha. It is the method of sealing the tooth so that no future infection occurs. Temporary filling may also be done by the dentist in some of the cases.
Step 5: Final Restoration: Once you have had the root canal treatment done. Your tooth needs to be finalized for restoration so that it gains its strength and functions again. This is generally done using a dental crown so that the tooth gets protected and blends with your other natural teeth.
One of the big advantages of a root canal is to keep your tooth; although it seems almost easier to just pull, it sets up long-term problems-issues with the bite, twisted shifting teeth, and the loss of bone. A root canal keeps your smile intact, preventing the need for more invasive and expensive procedures to replace your missing tooth, such as implants or bridges. Choose a root canal; your long-term future will have better and more stable dental health.
Mild soreness or sensitivity is common for a few days following your endodontic treatment. Your dentist should prescribe some over-the-counter pain-relieving agents and/or prescribe medication if they deem this to be necessary. You will typically be told not to chew or bite on the treated tooth until the final restoration in the form of a crown is ready.
Among other things, good oral hygiene is maintained by brushing and flossing frequently. And regular checkups to keep your root canal-treated tooth healthy.
